The KJV Qere List

This list shows the occurances of where the KJV translators followed and translated from the qere reading (the marginal note in the Masoretic Text) rather than the ketiv reading (the actual text of the Masoretic Text) when translating the Old Testament. If you haven't yet read the preceding page describing qere/ketiv, please do so for an introduction.

This list was initially generated via an online Bible search engine (at Ministry of the Word), but is incomplete. Additional qere readings in the KJV will be added to this list as I am made aware of them.

How to read this list

Each verse containing a qere reading is given. The word(s) that is the qere reading appearing in the KJV is indicated by the word(s) and Strong's number(s) before the bold, blue (8675). The ketiv is indicated by the Strong's number after the bold, blue (8675). This use of 8675 is somewhat of a standard for indicating a ketiv reading that was not used in the KJV (where the qere was used instead). From a concordance that utilizes this method:

08675 Kethiv Readings
In the Hebrew Bible, the scribes did not alter any text they felt
had been copied incorrectly. Rather they noted in the margin what they
thought the written text should be. The written variation is called a
kethiv and the marginal note is called the qere. Where the translators
of the Authorised Version followed the qere reading rather than the
kethiv, we indicate the kethiv reading by the number 08675.
For example, in Gen. 24:33 "was set" is coded as 07760 08675 03455.
The translators used the qere reading that has Strong's number 07760
but the kethiv reading is Strong's number 03455. Both words have the
   same meaning, "was set".

The Strong number "extensions" (8675 and greater) that appear in parenthesis, such as (8802) are Hebrew Definition indicators, that indicate mood, tense, etc. For example:

08802 Stem - Qal See 08851
Mood - Participle Active See 08814

I'm not yet sure how it was determined that the KJV followed the qere instead of the ketiv in some of these verses, as sometimes the qere and ketiv pairs are nearly identical in meaning. However, some of them are much more obvious. Also, you may notice that several of the listings have the same Strong's number both before and after the 8675 code. This is not a mistake, as multiple similar but different words can share a Strong's number, thus the qere and ketiv will still be different but similar words. For example, "captivity" and "captive" are both assigned Strong's #7622, yet are slightly different in meaning and usage.

I am not planning on explaining each entry. I have not even verified most of them. This list is mainly to simply show where qere readings occur in the KJV, leaving it up to those interested to examine any interesting ones in detail on their own. However, if you have any specific questions about any of the entries, go to the discussion forum and someone will help you out or at least point you in the right direction. And any detailed info we uncover about that specific listing, I'll add to the table for others to take advantage of. FYI, I wrote the table out in a straighforward way instead of linking to an Adobe file so no one would have to convert PDF to Excel or another file format. Also, if you find any significant and/or interesting ones here, or ones I've missed, please let me know!
